the scale is close to 1:1 on my 19 ? screen.
Looking at the gear pictured in your hand, it appears to be about 1.5
inches pitch diameter, and presumably it is the sun gear of the 2.17
unit of 36 teeth. This would point to a diametrical pitch DP of 24 (36
teeth / 1.5"). If DP of 24 is right, then the ring gear pitch dia is 78
/ 24 = 3.25". (If DP is 20, then the ring gear PD is 3.9" (78 / 20)).
Which DP (diametrical pitch) is it? Also, are above assumptions correct?

The 2.17 set uses a 33 tooth sun gear.
The 2.85 set uses a 42 tooth sun gear.
The ring gears are about the same pitch diameter but they do NOT

interchange.

They have a different number of teeth.

Matey - you've got me stumped again !!
71 teeth /33 = 2.15
72 teeth/33 = 2.18
78 teeth/36 = 2.17
78 teeth/42 = 1.85 ( +1 =2.85)
How many planetary/ratios are there available !!?

I have no idea. With three different planet sets in
 the A4OD alone
not counting all the C6 variations over the last 40 years probably
a bunch.

How many are 4 planets and how many are six !!?

That too I have not researched.

No wonder Don Dunbar has different part numbers !

I see it like this Paul - you know what your talking about and you think we
know what your talking about ( and we don't ). However we are getting there
!
Trying to get info from the supplier was like trying to pull teeth - I got
very little info from them. I got the feeling they were more confused than I
on the subject and it's the same thing here (down under).

Top is 2.17 four pinion.
Bottom is 2.85 six pinion.
Ironically the same sun gear part works for both. It goes in one way
for 2.17 and the other way for 2.85. It also shows the dramatic
difference in sun gear diameters.

Here too is my complete collection minus a sun gear or two.
