Hey Ken,

          I agree! The Renisis(RX-8) engine has side exhaust ports which
allow the engine to have no overlap between exhaust and intake strokes
which was to help emissions and economy and reduce appex seal temps. Even
though I think they went to ceramic type seals, as you said, this thing
is lighter than our 13B's and I've heard legit 300 HP numbers. They'll
need however a 2.85 to 1 or higher reduction unit as I believe they
redline@ 9000 as compaired to 6500 or so on the 13B's. I guess the rotors
weigh little to nothin by comparison, so it's real happy up there! This
was the same motor(called a26B) that was entered in 91' and handlely won
the 24-hour Le Mans(actually in the race it was a 4 rotor, called the
787B putting out around 700HP). The goal was to just finish as a first
time entry, so to win was quite an accomplishment. It was however the
first and perhaps last win for a rotary as they were banned the following
year(poor sports?)

Why we're first seeing it today is anyones guess, but, it's for real!!

  I have a connection in Australia that can get new in the crate RX8
engines for 6800 USD , I am sure they will be available over here
soon.
  They put out 247 hp in stock form and if you pull the cats and all
the other smog crap they put out right at 300 hp and that is without
a turbo and they weigh a bit less than the 13b that I am running.
  I can see this will be the way to go in the future.

Mazda tried for years to win Lemans. They finally did it in 1991.
The four rotor 26 B had both peripheral intake and exhaust ports.
the RX8 motor has both intake and exhaust on the side housings.
