Hey All:
Thought I would update you the happenings with regard to SERFI '03.
Hopefully you all will be receiving copies of the minutes from the meetings in February soon.
Chick had the misfortune to have his computer completely blow away his memory recently and so we
had to start all over again. Chick has been doing yoman work for us through the years and we want
him to know we appreciate his dedication and accomplishments very much.
You should be receiving SERFI '03 flyers soon. Please try to distribute them to as many local
airport FBOs as you can. Thanks Chick.
This year's SERFI flyer has a notice about the celebration of the 100th year of aerial flight. We
plan to have several activities dedicated to the recognition of this pivitol event in history. If
you have anybody in your Chapters that would like to put on a presentation about any phase of the
advancement of aerial flight, let us know so we can get you on the schedule. I'm sure our
visitors will be glad to hear what you have to say.
This year we are planning to increase the activities on Sunday to extend the time fly-in and main
gate visitors can come and enjoy the fly-in. I will be circulating a proposed program soon for
all to look at.
The Web site is up and running for SERFI '03 and if you haven't looked at it or logged on yet, you
are missing a top notch site. Thanks to Doug Francisco. If any of you who are listed have had a
change to your personal data. please let me know.
We have received our insurance policy for this year and am happy to say that they did not increase
the premium for '03, however, $1,600.00 is still a lot of money. Hopefully it will stabilize for
a couple of more years.
We have two aerial demonstrators commited to SERFI '03 so far and an inquiry from other interested
performers. I am penciling in a aerial demo for Sunday for this year and will present the idea to
the SERFI Org. at our end of summer meeting.
We are still looking for an Air Boss to handle the aerial demos. This mainly involves taking care
of the paperwork and procedural requirements before the shows. If anyone is interested we sure
could use the help in this area.
Keith Vinson forwarded a copy of the article that will be in SPORT AVIATION and it looks pretty
good. Thanks Keith. Keith also indicated that he will not be able to attend SERFI '03.
Hopefully we can find a person who has a knack for writing to take over this important job.
Tom Buchanan from EAA Chapt 485, Pensacola, has sweet talked the EAA B-17 people into coming to
SERFI '03 on Saturday. It will be in Pensacola on the previous days and go back there on Sunday.
Since Tom is our Young Eagles Manager, we will have to generate a ground crew for the B-17 while
it is at Evergreen. Anyone interested, please contact me. Great work, Tom.
Dennis Savarese our Publicity manager has been working with the US Coast Guard to have their
"chopper" on static display and possibly a pickup demo or two. I have watched this demo before
and it is pretty interesting. He also has been talking with the USAF guys about a "heavy iron"
fly by with four F-15s or '16s. Hopefully that will happen, but the presently on-going war may
impact what demos the USAF can perform. Good work Dennis.
The Rag Wing Special that Murray Gardner has been building as part of the educational forums he
has put on for many years at SERFI has produced a full up, flyable airplane. He has provided me
with photos and it really looks great. He is currently wading through the required paperwork with
the FAA and as soon as that is completed, he will fly off the required 40 test hours. He has
donated this airplane to SERFI with the stipulation that he receives half of the proceeds to start
another project which he would donate to SERFI again. Thanks so much for this generous donation,
Murray. We plan to raffle it off to generate excitement in SERFI throughout the Region, but
mainly so that everyone will have a chance to win it. As soon as we iron out the legal aspects
and the 40 hours have been flown off, we should be ready to distribute raffle tickets. It looks
more and more like we will have the drawing during SERFI '04 and use SERFI '03 to have the
airplane on display and kick off the raffle. This will give us a full year's worth of publicity.
More to come.
This year Awards Banquet tickets will be sent to Chapters in advance. Chapter members will thus
have a chance to buy them at a discount price. This will give us a better feel for the amount of
tickets being sold and the amount of food to order.
Stan Tew, our vendor/exhitor chairman is starting to receive inquiries about spaces, so activity
in this area is picking up. Stan has really dedicated himself to this area and I note that he has
made some technical additions to the paperwork processing. Many thanks, Stan.
Dick Simpson and Dave Richardson of Chapter 152, Trussville, AL are proceeding with developing an
award for alternate engine installations. They have received inputs from the field and are
starting to generate the checklist that follows the EAA format. If they are successful, SERFI
will be the leader throughout EAA for an award of this sort. If you have any ideas, please

The paperwork for this year's SERFI '03 Logo has gone in and B-n-S will have T-shirts, caps and
patches ready for us in October. Volunteer patches are being made at EAA as we speak. As in the
past, Chick has designed the LOGO for '03. Thanks again, Chick
I will be going to Evergreen and check what has to be done to our booths and equipment and will
schedule a workday to get it all done. Any ideas to improve our appearance (like color schemes,
etc) will be appreciated.
Hope to see most of you at Sun-n-Fun this next week. I will be at the EAA Membership tent on
Tuesday and Wednesday mornings and at the Regional Fly-In tent, on and off, most of the rest of
