I'm still concerned with using a carbon material like chrome molly -
although it's bloody good stuff.
There a whole heap of heat issues which can and will affect it and I
don't
know if that will significantly affect the wear surface - I assume it
will
!!

My foundry guy does not think so. Since the side housing temp rarely
exceeds 250 F we are not worried. Also Mazda does the same thing
on the rotor housings. If you look closely you will see a thin
steel insert in the rotor housing casting that is then chrome plated.
Chrome plating over the steel insert is one of our options.
Chrome plating over aluminum is known to cause problems.

I'd prefer to keep away from the chrome plating, if possible, as it is only
a coating. We all know what happens to rotor housing when the chrome is worn
through.
In the side housings, when disassembling older motors you notice pronounced
wearing of the surface near the sparkplugs and to a lesser degree on the
opposite side with almost no wear top and bottom - so if the chrome molly is
OK this would be the trick as it is hard all the way through and not just a
surface treatment.
In a chromed wear face this won't show-up on short term testing, but could
be a problem long term, as it is in the rotor housings.
Just throwing in a few thoughts on the matter.
