I would test whatever system you want to try on a few loose pieces, just to
be sure that the material will not hydraulic in the groove. There should be
some room left around the "O" ring material. The very small bead of silicone
in the bottom of the groove will completely finish filling the groove after
the "O" ring has filled most of it.
Any excess silicone squeezes out of the groove and makes a little mess. The
stock "O" ring is nothing to write home about, and it still works just fine.
You cannot install a ring of any material if it is so big that it fills the
groove and then some. It hase to be just short of filling the groove
completely.
That was a different idea, where a large diameter solid copper bare wire
would be used as the "O" ring. The copper would cold flow, and with silicone
around it, I think it would work just fine as an "O" ring.
