Rhino has this neat feature of calculating the volume of
an object. If you know the volume you know the weight.
The density of steel is .3 pounds per cubic inch.

The solid shaft on the left weighs 6 pounds.
The hollow four inch diameter shaft on the right with
a .1 inch wall thickness weighs 2.5 pounds.

Dan is doing a FEA on the hollow shaft so we
shall see what we shall see.

Paul,

Would you recommend Rhino as a learning program?

I want to draw some basic stuff (I hope) tubes, gears, bearings but
have *NO* 3d drawing experience. I downloaded an evaluation version of
"Rhinoceros". I assume this is the "Rhino" program you use.

Thanks.

Yes on Rhinoceros that's it.

IMHO it is ten times easier to learn than Solid Works, Pro Engineer
or Anvil. Particularly if you already know early versions of ACAD. If
you sign up for a night course somewhere you can get it for $300.
As you may have noticed I can knock stuff out lickety split.
