For all:  Dave Richardson, EAA Chapter 152, Trusville, Alabama, is chairman of the Alternative
Engine Award Criteria Group that  is working hard to produce judging criteria for use at the EAA
South Eastern Regional Fly In (SERFI) this year.  This new class of EAA Award is the result of
inputs at SERFI '02 by Mssrs. Ed Anderson and Richard Sohn and recognition of the need of an award
of this kind  by the SERFI Judges.  Ed and Richard submitted their thoughts to Dave earlier.  This
is a difficult area to tackle and it is interesting to note that EAA does not have an award of
this type in their list.  In this regard, we owe Dave and his group a "big thank you" for their
efforts.

Here are some of the ideas that Dave and his group have come up with.

1. Alternative engine is any engine that is not produced originally for aviation use.

2. Judging will be only  "'Fire wall forward".

2. Aircraft can be judged in other categories as well.

3. The required 40 hours must have been flown off.

4. There may be a separate sub-division for direct drive and re-drives.

5.  Currently, Judging Milestones are established and the relative values being determined.  When
finished, the documentation will be formatted the same as the current judging references within
EAA.  A copy will be submitted to EAA for their consideration.

As soon as Dave and his group have their document ready, copies will be made available.

Dave:  Thanks again for your work.  Tracy Crook has adapted a Mazda RX8 Rotary engine to his RV
and won his class in this year's Sun 100 race at Sun-n-Fun.   Hope I have characterized your
efforts to date correctly.
