The trick to keeping the runner wall thickness down is the trick with
the off set O rings shown in the second jpg. Teflon encapsulated silicone
O-rings would work well hear as they would reduce the friction forces.

Paul, while I think most of your designs are wonderfully pratical I believe you are missing the
boat on this one. My suggestion is to use two sets of two runners, like Mazda did on the Le Mans
engine. Then get some thin al plates or thinner steel plates laser cut so the centers are the same
and mount a linear bearing like Mazda did. Link the plates togeather with heim joints like a
throttle, then push or pull with a standard vernier cable. set a ratio to get the travel you

The 3D I uploaded above was only one runner out of a total of four of course.
All four are controlled by the one hydraulic cylinder. I can't imagine
how anything could be simpler than that :)
Here is the Mazda four rotor intake system which looks Rube Goldberg to me.
