The best solution probably would be to use an oil cooler other than
Mazda, that has a better form factor (aspect ratio of 2:1 instead of
5:1), and locate it on the belly or elsewhere with good ducting. Has
anyone ever found a non-Mazda oil cooler that would survive?

  Fluidyne has the cooler you are looking for. Built very similar to the
stock Mazda cooler but with a form factor more like what you want. Not
cheap nor light, but I'm confident that it will be as functional and as
bulletproof as the stock cooler. If you order, dont tell them its for an
airplane!

Thanks Mike, that looks like the solution. The form factor of the Mazda cooler may be fine
for folks with side-by-side airplanes, but for us guys with tandem narrow-body fuselages, it
is very difficult to work with.
