Can Tracy do a quick test for me. Takeoff and climb out at a lean
setting and tell me:
1. Approximately the amount of power loss, percentage?
2. If the oil temperature is any higher than during a rich, normal
takeoff and climbout?

I'll make a point to look closely at this next time I fly but I'm pretty
sure I would have noticed this trend if it were happening. The results may
depend on where on the mixture curve that you compare. I virtuall never
run my engine in the rich mixture range where things get cooler (rich of
peak). Oil getting hotter with leaned mixture may require the comparison to
start in this very rich zone.
If the oil cooler is really doing its job it should not be necessary to run
so rich that it actually cools the oil. I ran the Sun 100 race at very lean
condition, only 1 bar flashing on the mixture monitor.

Thanks Tracy, probably no merit to my idea. The excess fuel in a rich mixture perhaps does a
better job of cooling air-cooled engines, but with a water-cooled engine maybe there is not
much effect.
Do you (or anyone else) see the white color in your exhaust ports supposedly due to lean
mixture? Just curious.
Another thing on the list of things to do: build a mixture monitor.
