Subject: Another oil injection failure mode.

So why can't we do both?

We have the metering pump by-pass kit to get oil from a resevoir. We put an earlier gen front
cover on to allow us to use the mech pump.
Are the 2nd gen oil injectors different in such a way as to not have this failure mode? Will the
2nd gen oil injectors work in our 3rd gen rotor housings?

Chrissi

At your own peril Chrissi. I think a lot of engines are in junk yards because of one kind or
another of apex lube system problems. Those puny five cent nylon lines get brittle and get
cracked.

Paul Lamar

Paul,

whats the peril, I said BOTH?

What I was trying to get was something usable informationwise not just get dismissed, thanks.

Chrissi

OK! You are NOT dismissed. Come to attention soldier!

Hey no skin off my teeth if you want to do both. Are you worried about forgetting to put oil
in the fuel? George Graham did that and flew half way across the country. Did not seem to hurt the
engine as apparently he is still flying it as far as I know.

Chrissi/Paul,

Dumb question, I'm sure: "Why not change the Nylon lines for something more robust...?
(copper, brass, S/S...?)

It is hard to do. They are swaged on to the injectors and on to the pump.

Lots of tiny machine work IMHO. Or a special swaging tool.
AN -4 or -6 double braid SS teflon lined hose would be great if it fit
which I doubt. The fittings are probably metric. Rumor has it the
RX8 lines are steel.

There is another factor as well. The apex seal oil is injected in only one
place on the current rotor housings. This assumes it gets evenly distributed
to all the wear points. This is not the case. Mixing the oil with
the fuel does a far better job of lubeing all the rotor seals.

Mazda is in a rock and a hard spot because of the draconian
hydrocarbon emissions regulations. This has led to less and less
oil being injected. In fact the third gen electronic oil metering pump
cost $1100, because of the complex functions it is called on to service.
Everything from throttle opening, RPM, MAP to duty cycle and more.
It can actually detect the presence of an EPA wacko within ten feet.
Fortunately we don't have to worry about that and we can give the
engine all the lube oil it needs.
