Nichols Ford 3.8L V-8 powered RV that I read about in Contact.  He used
what appears to be finned aluminum extrusion to wrap around the oil

the heat sink around the oil filter would not be a very effective method
because the conduction from the filter to the heat sink would not be

layer of heatsink compound around the filter and then clamped the
heatsink to the filter.  For those of you who are not familiar with
heatsink compound, it's a highly conductive paste that is spread on
computer chips prior to applying a heatsink.  It fills any voids and
areas that are not making perfect contact.

Do you think a heatsink around the oil filter could be effective or
would it be a waste of time?

Won't hurt. Unless you have as much metal in contact with the oil as
is in contact with the air it won't transfer heat very well.
Fins are needed both inside the oil filter and outside the oil filter.
The area of those fins is also really very inadequate to do much.
