I could never quite make that leap of faith to try this though.  I still have a Maico Service Manual with this
procedure detailed.

Ken, MANY manufacturers suggest little or no ring lube on assembly. On a rotary I don't believe you would have the advantage of a pinned two stroke piston ring. IE.. always in the same position. The tip seals would probably tend to "set in position." The translating side seals probably not.
The housings have a polished surface of course, no hatching to  break into. The standard piston builders are using finer and finer hones now using 600 or finer hones for finish! The
cylinder looks polished. The rotary probably fares best with ultra-hard fine finished surfaces. The LeMans engines det. gun coatings are very hard. Bill Jepson
