This is one of those subjects that probably does not have a 'right' answer unless you have a specific requirement, i.e., non-roller camshafts.  If you do not want to use the 'professional' assembly lubes you might try 1/2 STP 1/2 30 wt motor oil.  I use Golden Spectro 2-stroke oil on pistons and rings, even on 4-strokes.  I like the idea of having an oil designed NOT to leave deposits on the parts that will see high heat.  I have only built 1 rotary so I am certainly not an expert, but I used Golden Spectro on it as well.  BTW, I raced Maico motorcycles in the 1970's and Maico recommended NO piston or ring lubricant upon startup of a new engine (remember, the oil was mixed in the gas).  I could never quite make that leap of faith to try this though.  I still have a Maico Service Manual with this procedure detailed.
