Ken, MANY manufacturers suggest little or no ring lube on

assembly. On a rotary I don't believe you would have the
advantage of a pinned two stroke piston ring. IE.. always in
the same position. The tip seals would probably tend to "set
in position." The translating side seals probably not.

The housings have a polished surface of course, no hatching

to  break into. The standard piston builders are using finer
and finer hones now using 600 or finer hones for finish! The

cylinder looks polished. The rotary probably fares best

with ultra-hard fine finished surfaces. The LeMans engines
det. gun coatings are very hard. Bill Jepson

OH Bill, where were you 30 years ago when I was starting to learn about engines.  
There was no internet and about my only resources were motorcycle magazines 
and HOT ROD magazine, and they often didn't know any more than I.  This list 
is an invaluable learning experience!  (But I still don't think that I can 
make myself put piston and rings in dry!)
