STP, once touted as an acronym for Scientifically Treated Petroleum, in
actuality
was a product of Andy and STudebaker-Packard.
I was privy to the original conversations dealing with marketing.
It does stick, without question, and does increase viscosity, but
was not formulated as an assembly lubricant.  This mixture of STP, and
engine oil for assembly is still used by many that have carried on
with this concoction. While this is sufficient for simple devices,
there are specific high-pressure assembly lubricants for this purpose
which "stick" as well.
I sincerely doubt you would find many, if any,  pro racing engine shops
assembling with STP.   It has it's place, but not in my shop.
