Also, there's an '87 turbo longblock on ebay I've been eyeing -
any negatives you could point out towards building up one of these?

And one more... How about part interchangeability between model years?

I forget to answer the turbo question. The 87 engine itself is not
that bad. Unfortunately that year turbo and manifold tend to crack.
You could get a 89-91 turbo and manifold and bolt them on.
