Subject: "broken rotor"

Hello all-

Long time lurker here...

A friend of mine is scrapping his '91 RX7 due to a "broken rotor". I don't know
what the actual damage is, but he's fairly car-savvy so I imagine that something
bad actually happened.

I'm building (ok, getting ready to start really soon now) a RV-10 & have been
thinking Renesis + turbo for when I get to needing an engine. Is it worth
taking the 13b engine out of the rx7 before it goes to the great scrap heap in
the sky? Could something so dreadful have happen as to reduce the engine to
uselessness? I need 250HP+ & had figured a 3-rotor (or the Renesis) was in the
cards as the way to go...

Thanks for any advice,

Mark

First let me say a broken rotor is unheard of. Chewed up by a fractured
apex seal yes.

Absolutely. If only one rotor is "broken" The other half of the 91 engine
is probably still in good shape. If the engine has not be taken apart
how does he know the rotor is "broken". It could be the end and center housing
surrounding the "broken" rotor are still in good shape.

Also if it is a 91 turbo let me know and I will buy the engine with all its
parts. The turbo is the best Mazda stock turbo to use in an aircraft engine.
Also get the fuel pump and bell housing.

BTW a fractured apex seal in an RX8 engine will do far less damage to the
housings as it is impossible for parts of it to jam in the non existent
peripheral exhaust port.

As far as the RV10 is concerned a three rotor would be perfect.
