Paul,
I've been looking at my oil cooler install, and I think
I'm going to try your new idea. It would clean things up
on the left side of my engine. I could get rid of the
exit duct on top and close off the top of the cowl again.
I could move the whole oil cooler forward a few inches
to make the connections at the rear instead of the front.
Moving the oil cooler forward would help with cg ever
so slightly. Getting rid of the inlet and exit ducts will
save a small amount of weight, although I will still have
a small inlet duct at the leading edge of the cooler and
the sides. The area inside the cowl above the oil cooler
gets freed up.

I don't know why I didn't think if it earlier since
it is just a copy of what my water cooling arrangement
has been for the last two years. So we may have some
real world data soon. Even if it doesn't work as well, it
would be easier to put two oil coolers beside each other
using this method than with what I have now. I've got
marginal oil temps anyway when the ambient is 80F+, so
maybe two oil coolers is the ultimate solution. I will try
it first with one though to get a comparison.

BTW Ken is using something similar as he is feeding his two
oil coolers with constant area scoop/ducts.
He reports excellent results with a slow airplane.
IMHO he could cut the tubes off flush with the start of the oil
coolers. It should work as well. In effect he is bypassing
the boundary air so you might want to do that if
you mount the coolers way aft under the strake.
