I guess you mean annealing when you say heat treating.

Hi George!
 No George, don't mean to be contradictory but, I don't mean annealing.
A proper "heat treating" on 4130 might include a anneal, AND a
treatment. (Normalizeing is a typical process. where the part is heated
and furnace cooled to anneal then TEMPERED at very specific temps.)
Tempering is used to increase strength. The shot peen step is optional,
but is usually a very effective treatment on stressed steel parts. It
acts like a mini forging process and normalizes the surface. I have a
set of the ASM (Yank Society for Metals) books that has a huge volume on
heat treat. The book is a great insomnia cure. zzzzzz. Spot on info
though.

PS. I love the looks of the original casting. If you can make it
lighter and stronger so much the better. Hang in and don't get too
frustrated. Remember what they say about pioneers. You can always tell
