None of this nonsense would be necessary if there were such a thing
 as a 98% efficient infinite variable transmission. Then the engine
 could run at near peak power RPM most of the time much like it
 does in an aircraft.

The design problem being overcome with the variable inlet lengths is making
the power band broad enough so that a six speed transmission can get the car
from zero to about 170-190 MPH or higher. A large number of standing starts
after refueling with a usable first gear. Usable would be around 2.0 :1. This with
a final drive ratio that keeps the engine below the red line in top gear. The
aero drag load is so high in the top gears, that the upper ratios are closer
together. A much bigger problem than I have with a top speed of 140 at most
tracks.
