The use of the "upwind" carburettor is not that unusual. The suck through 
method works fine provided your shaft seals are
compatable with gasoline. (Most are) Almost all the 
aftermarket motorcycle turbos were set up this way. More recent, (last 5
years) have finally been showing up with FI. Bill Jepson
