My exhaust system approach will be to fit/seal  a 3" dia T304 SS flex
section over the exhaust pipe from the engine to the exit from the cowl.

Such material can be found at J C Whitney for ~ 7.60 /ft.

Hey that's a great idea Keith. I did not know you could get that stuff in
3 inch diameter. That's a major break through on this issue. Cheap too.

Install a blast tube for a bit of cooling air between the pipes and problem
solved once and for all.

Assuming of course your down pipe is 2.5 inch OD or less. I wonder if you
can get it in 3.5 or 4 inch ID?

  Would this HAVE to be SS?  Standard steel flex can be had in those
larger diameters very easy.

Probably if there is enough clearance and enough cooling air. The problem
with mild steel is high temp oxidation. AKA corrosion.
