Mark & Paul,
I had a look at those BMW dampers and they are pretty heavy, a much lighter
damper is what Don Dunbar is using and Tracy's is lighter still.
I could not get a good look at the planetary but the spiel did say it was
held by the intermediate flange, however Paul may be right, it didn't seem
to have the larger groove in the OD of the ring gear.
BTW I've got both sets now Paul, I even bought the 2.17 toothed retainer to
ascertain the designed play between the planetary and the retainer.
The 2.17 housing seems to be pressed metal as is the drive flange and
integral splined spigot - which doesn't seem to be as strong as the steel
housing of the 2.85, it's also thinner on the 2.17.
I didn't see what ratio this unit provided, it's quite obviously designed
for a Subaru and turns in the opposite direction, unless it's a 3.17 ratio.
It does however look well made!!

It must be a 2.17 as the ring gear is attached the the prop shaft
and the 3.17 has the planet attached to to the prop shaft like the
2.85.
The 3.17 is the same gear set as the 2.17.
Ross also offered a 1.7 which I believe is the same gear set as the 2.85.
When you talk of the pressed steel housing are you talking about the
housing that holds the 6 planet gears ??
