Considering I got rid of the standard crank angle sensor, I have to make-up
for it. John Slade installed the magnetic trigger by the main belt pulleys
per Bruce Turrentine's suggestion. I was wandering if someone can provide
some installation guidance, since john was not quite sure. He gave me the
extra metal ring he had (that attaches to the pulley) and one magnet
[reluctor
pick up]. I need one more magnet [reluctor pick up]. Where do you get these?
Thanks,

Tracy should know how to do this. The reluctor pick up can be bought from
Mazda.
They are also called inductive proximity sensors.
You should be able to buy one from the RX8 engine soon or the third gen for
sure.
The same type of sensors are used on anti lock braking systems. Usually
one on each wheel. The beauty of the reluctor pick up is it does not require
(unlike a hall effect sensor) a magnet to operate. Any ferrous metal
discontinuity will trigger it such as a tooth on a gear. It is also
a very simple and reliable device being many turns of fine wire wound
around a metal core.
There is a company called Omron that makes them with built in conditioning
electronics and a open collector transistor output for a nice clean pulse.
They can sense metal changes up to 5 mm away. Digi Key catalog TO33 page
1144. About $50 to $60.

You can buy them here for half price.

Check with Tracy and see if they will work with his computer.

Hi Don,
Do you have a picture of the crank angle sensor? Tracy thinks I can use it
on my 13B Cosmo, and where I can get one?
Thanks.
Bulent
Did you ask Tracy if you can use a open collector output transistor?
If so you can save a lot of money. I am sure you will be able to buy them from
Mazda sooner or later but the cost will be astronomical.

Here is Tracy's answer:
The Mazda parts will work with the EC2 assuming the trigger wheel is properly
indexed on the engine and the polarity is correct on the pickups. The
digikey parts might work but there are too many unknowns to be sure. I'd
have to test the part to be sure.
I assume you don't want to use the built in sensor then. I don't know
anyone who has installed sensors on the flywheel other than the Powersport
engine. I also make an EC2 for use with the RX-8 crank sensor which only
requires a single sensor. That might make it easier to come up with a
sensor mount. You can get a sensor wheel for it from Mazda (I have one on
order now and I have a sample to copy) They are cut from a .080" steel
sheet.
Tracy
Confused yet? :)

I am not saying anything about the flywheel sensor. I am talking about
a lower cost option for the stock RX8 sensor which is the same size and will
probably fit in the same bracket. I am not talking about the steel ring
that goes behind the eshaft pulley. One could cut one of those out of
steel sheet and it would works as well as the Mazda unit.
My guess is Mazda will charge
something like $200 for a $30 part. The ignition modules for the
first and second gen where something like $300 each and you need two.
