G'day from DMRH
Here is part of that Russian rotary page.
In second half of the 80th of years in SKB RPD began to be turned the organizations,
which carry out the development of light flight vehicles and air cushion vehicles. The
representatives of practically all Russian aviation firms were. ???
The reasons, for which they were forced to turn to us:
the absence of the domestic aircraft engine with a power 40... of 270 hp for the light
and super-lightweight flight vehicles; the analysis of the parameters of power plants of
different types, executed by them, he indicated the prospect of the application OF RPD.
The attempt to adapt the existing automobile engine without the large changes for the
requirements of aviation was made for the practical estimation/evaluation of application
on the flight vehicle rotary- of piston engine according to the insistence of customers
for reduction of prices and accelerating the works. Was modernezirovan automobile RPD OF
VENYUKOVSKY FITTINGS PLANT -413 and were carried out bench and full-scale tests in the
composition of the vessel on the dynamic pillow/pad " Volga -2 " and of aircraft cl
-90(I-1)"Lewi1 ". these tests confirmed the fitness rotary- of piston engine to its use
in the aviation. In the course of of these works the designers OF SKB RPD large
experience was accumulated. However, the nonconformity of the automobile systems of
engine to the requirements of aviation rules did not make it possible to pass to the
production of such engines.
In 1990 on the initiative of the Moscow helicopter of zavoda(MVZ) im. M.l. mile we
concluded/included agreement for the development of aviation RPD OF VENYUKOVSKY FITTINGS
PLANT -430 for the light multipurpose helicopter MI-34 OF VENYUKOVSKY FITTINGS PLANT it
was assumed that the opened/discovered access to the technologies of aviaproma will make
it possible in a short time to create highly effective engine. All aggregates/units were
ordered in the enterprises of aviation and defense- industrial complex. We strictly have
developed engine. Unfortunately, we encountered/collided with the fact that in the
branches
indicated was lost the experiment/experience of the creation of small size
aggregates/units, and on some questions competent developers completely are absent.
Thus, it was impossible to find the developer of the electronic system of injection and
engine control. The remaining aggregates/units and the systems, developed for the engine
OF VENYUKOVSKY FITTINGS PLANT -430, were not characterized by contemporary technical
level, and executors/performers simply did not manage the ignition system.
After feeling situation, we prepared the prototype of aviation RPD with the automobile
aggregates/units. this allowed us to conduct large ob'em finishing works along the
engine itself and to successfully undergo in the composition of power plant the 150-
hour tests with the screw/propeller, which were carried out BY AO the aircraft engine of
g.Perm'.
However, all these works were ended because of the absence of financing from the side of
basic customer.
In y99yg. to order of particular firm " LM- AERO- " by us, without the attraction of the
co-executors of aviaproma, was developed aviation RPD OF VENYUKOVSKY FITTINGS PLANT
-1187 by the power of 40 hp for the super-lightweight flight vehicles. Were prepared 15
prototypes, whose running tests continue today. Several engines they were forced to the
power of shchshchl.s. na you del'talete with this motor it was won the championship of
Russia into y99yag., and on the championship of the peace/world of y99yag. of 38
del'taletov our crew was 19 and by the second among the Russian participants. In y99'g.
on the championship of Russia in the exercise to the efficiency/cost-effectiveness the
crew with our motor occupied the first place.
Being based on the accomplished work and after gathering information about the foreign
engines, we carried out the analysis of the expedient application OF RPD, from which
became obvious that in the range of power 40... 300 hp rotary- piston engine it was
competitive with the contemporary piston engines.
For the substantiation of the possibility of the development of aviation direction in
the activity AO OF " AUTO-VAZ " was assembled the information about the foreign and
Russian markets for aircraft engines.
In Russia 1993 it was in operation of approximately 1000 light aircraft and helicopters
of business- class, 8000 - were used for the national economic targets/purposes, 5000 -
trainer aircraft. As a rule, all these flight vehicles belong to organizations, since in
Russia was absent the lawful base, which makes it possible to exploit aircraft for
private individuals. All this held in control the development of the market for flight
vehicles and aircraft engines.
15.03.1993g. The President signed edict Nee8 " about the development and the activity in
the Russian federation of the aviation of the general purpose." On the basis of this
edict was developed the program of development AON. all this it made possible a
development of this form of transport. Today occurs the formation of lawful base,
structures of administration and insurance, development and mastery/adoption of the
production of flight vehicles.
One of the basic problems in the development AON Russia- this absence of the domestic
engine, which satisfies contemporary requirements.
The only engine, which is produced in Russia for the light flight vehicles it is M-14,
piston star-shaped air-cooled engine the power of e'0l.s., but the given power is not
optimum for the ya-shchmestnykh machines. Foreign experiment/experience shows that most
mass in this class of flight vehicles are the motors power 200... 220l.s.
At present in Russia the engines of this class are not produced, but in aviaprome there
are no structures, capable in a short time to develop and to place on the production the
engines of this power, since aviation KB were occupied from the end 40- X of years by
development and production of jet-propulsion technology.
However, introduction for the Russian market for foreign engines is hindered/hampered
because of the need for the mastery/adoption of production and retail outlet network of
special aviation fuel/propellant and oil, high price, lawful problems.
All this served as the base for the management/manual SKB RPD to leave with the proposal
about the mastery/adoption AO OF " AUTO-VAZ " of the market for aircraft engines. this
initiative was supported by the management/manual of department and by Director-General.
During December y99shchg. was given the claim into THE POPPY (intergovermental aviation
committee) about the certification AO OF " AUTO-VAZ " as the developer of aviation
equipment. During January y99'g. of komisiya POPPY worked according to the
estimation/evaluation of the possibilities of Venyukovsky Fittings Plant as the
developer of aviation equipment. The results of the work of commission were positive,
was given out certificate N R -40 from 26.5.96g.
With this work was in parallel developed and affirmed the concept of the development of
aviation RPD for shortening of expenditures/consumptions and lives as the basis was
accepted the section of the automobile OF RPD, which has the high level of finalizing
and equipment. On the base of this section the number is constructed by power:
two-section RPD from 140 to y80l.s.
three-piece RPD from 200 to e00l.s.
this concept makes it possible to have the wide range of engines with the high level of
unification. Thus, are covered practically all possible versions of the flight vehicles,
which relate to the aviation of the general purpose.
Taking into account that practically all professional/occupational KB developed aircraft
and helicopters under engine 200... 220l.s. was accepted the solution about development
and production of the prototypes of aviation RPD OF VENYUKOVSKY FITTINGS PLANT -426 with
the power of 2y0l.s. At present occurs the production of prototypes, testing, work with
the subdivisions of State Aviation Registry and center of certification.
For the buyer RPD it is attractive fact that makes it possible to create LA convenient
in the operation, with the high level of comfort, simple in the maintenance/servicing.
Our engine has lower expenditures for operation because of the application of cheap
automobile fuel/propellant and oil. Is assumed lower price of the engine with respect to
the imported samples.
But it should be noted that we deal concerning the area of technology unmastered in
Russia and, therefore, upon the introduction even of traditional power plants, are
required the preparation for production, the organization of the network/grid of
maintenance/servicing and repair, the instruction of personnel, advertising company.

RUSSIAN AMPHIB WINS FAA CERTIFICATION
A six-place Russian-built amphibious aircraft equipped with American
engines and avionics has won FAA type certification. The
first two of the Beriev Be-103 aircraft now in the United
States will be sold at a reduced price of $650,000. The aircraft
has a claimed payload of 849 pounds and is powered by two
210-hp Continental engines. The cockpit is equipped with Honeywell
Bendix/King avionics. The aircraft has a maximum cruise speed
of 135 knots and lands on its fuselage for water landings or
landing gear for land operations. It was designed by Beriev
Aircraft Company in Taganrog, Russia, and is built in eastern Russia
near the Chinese border at Komsomolsk-on-Amur. The U.S. distributor
is Kent Linn at Sky Manor Airport in Pittstown, New Jersey.

The bottom of the first web page on this airplane says that it will use
two "vankel" type engines made by Vaz in russia. Then it goes on to say
that it will use continental engines. Anybody know what engines they are
intending to use on this plane?
Brian Trubee
Continentals in the US because they are certified. Vaz/Lada Wankels in Russia
because they are better :)

Ford/Mazda needs to wake up and FAA certify the RX8 engine for use in aircraft.
We have already showed them how to do it including use of their own transmission
parts in the psru.
I would be glad to help them in any way I could.
BTW for all you one rotor fans. How many are interested in buying a Russian
one rotor? I am thinking of hopping on a flight to Russia and contacting
the factory.

Be intesting to know how many Mazda parts fit/ are
interchangeable? They are
pretty good at sticking to the original design.
Márk Wrathall.
As a word of caution, the following statement is copied from the web
site:
Rolf Pfeiffer
"But the life of the Lada-Wankel engines is terribly short: 20.000
km!! This
because the Russian alloy is of poor quality: a Wankel engine needs
high-quality
materials for the various elements. Making an engine of this type with
the Russian
steels, it's like producing an aeromotive engine with the bronze of
the antique
coins...These engines are very interesting, but the lacks of money and
resources
makes the ideas of the Russians engineers hard to translate in the
reality. Still
today, these engines are produced in limited series (also for the
aeronautical
use), and used, for example, on the new Lada "110 Super Tourism" (two
pics above),
equipped with a two-rotor engine, for the National championships."
That was then! Russians can now buy steel and other metals from anywhere
in the world.
Sounds like anti communist propaganda. I flat don't believe it.
Their fighter aircraft and rockets are second to none.

I have to chime in. I am by no means an expert on alloys or Wankel
engines.
In the model engine market the Russions seem to have some of the best
competition control line engines, and its because of the alloy of metals
they use, aluminum piston, brass or aluminum, chromed sleeve.

I agree. I donīt know now, but for a long time the Russians where also world
leading in welding technology and metalurgy in general. In school we got
explained that is because in the old soviet system research was done in any
area until there was nothing left to research, if it was necessary for the
present level of technology or economy or not. In the western world in
contrast, research was mostly done on some kind of economic basis and then
only to a depth that was required for a certain project on hand "... until
here and no further!" - money rules.
However in the eastern block, this way there was a lot of knowledge on
standby to be applied after a short development time as all the basic
research was already there.
On a similar note compare the new Bombardier aircraft engines with the LOM
aircraft engines. The LOMīs a roughly 40 years old in their present stage,
but they constantly update them. Donīt need carbheat, have selective
supercharger, altitude compensating fuel injection - no mic control needed,
aluminium alloy con rods, run on any gasoline you find, aircooled and here
is the hammer: they are still at least 50lbs lighter than the new breed! At
the nearly same specific fuel consumption!
Who ever wrote the report on that russian engines, probably did not know a
whole lot of the inside workings of russian production...
