If it is of any interest I talked to a tech who works for the
company that does the remans for Ford dealers here in my
corner of the universe. His opinion of E4OD failures and also
of current transmission failures is that they are all related to
poor lubrication design. The transmission lubes from the rear
towards the front which, under certain conditions, leaves the
front short of oil and of course once that happens the rest is
just a matter of time. His view is that the 6 planet steel carrier
design should carry a lot more power than is being put through
it now ( by the power stroke diesels) as long as you could keep
lubrication to the gears.
My other thought is that torque is indeed the measurement
we should be looking at. In heavy trucks there have been many
changes in gear design inside the same physical size of case to
accommodate ever increasing torque loads. I run a 1984 with
400 hp and about a 1000 ft lb new 400 hp engines give about
twice the torque. Gears changes have been made to put more
teeth in contact at all times leading me to conclude that it is the
torque we should be concerned with when trying to compare
things not the hp.
The last is off topic- the heart beats much more quickly
when, as you are driving home as I was tonight, you discover that
the road is icy by changing ends 3 times across two lanes before
getting under control so you can carry on. Good thing there is not
much traffic here in the sticks. Bryan in Princeton B.C.
