My conservative nature wants to believe that 5300 - 6000 rpm with a 2.17 (or
so) reduction would be optimum.  I understand using higher RPM and lower
gear ratios, but how do the higher revs translate into increased stress,
wear, gyro forces, etc.?
Also, a few racers (cars) don't care about gear noise, but they do care
about axial loading on the planetary gears in their transmission.  So, they
use straight cut gears in their transmissions as opposed to helical.  Any
info?
(I'm new, so if I'm re-plowing something already discussed, just lemme
know.)

Forget what you know about RPM vis a is a piston engine. A rotary is
a whole nother animal. RPM does no harm up to about 10,000 RPM or so.
In fact rotor bearing loads are a minimum at 6000 RPM. There is absolutely 
nothing jerking back and fourth.

Helical gear thrust is a problem but Tracy uses a thrust bearing to take the
thrust unlike some early Ross gear boxes using the same Ford planetary
gear set.
