On takeoff he had to maintain 6500 fpm climb

To keep the speed down or he would tear the gear doors off. Too bad it

is

gone. It was a beautifully done plane.

What was his gross weight?  At 2500 lbs, it would take almost 500 excess HP
(at 100% efficiency) to climb at that rate, (at 2000 lbs, almost 400) that's
500 HP over and above what it takes to sustain level flight.  Are you sure
the builder is not suffering from a little "builder's enthusiasm" in that
climb rate?
