Did the Motorcycle engine have butterflies in the carbs, or at the
housings?

The motorcycle had butterflies at the carbs. It is essential to have the
butterflies at the housing.

Paul,
any guess why the "butterflies at the carbs" worked fine on the motorcycle,
but had to be moved to the ports on the aircraft setup?

You got me. I have driven a two rotor NSU RO80 in 1999 in Germany with P-ports and
long runners with the butterflies in the carb and I could notice no problems
at all. The engine pulled from low RPM fine. It did however have two stage
p-ports and carb as in these pictures. A small one for low power and a larger one
for higher powers. The one rotor Spider engine had the same p-porting.
