The Reno Racer:

chassis design ala race cars of the early fifties (airplanes of the
thirties)with push rod OHV piston engine from the same era driving a

FOUR

blade unducted fan: Have these guys been on Mars or in a coma for the

last 40

years?  600 HP big block when they can have a 900HP 20B from RB at 2/3

weight!

Even if they had been on this Newsletter for this past year they may

have had

a chance with the money they will spend on this loser! They say they
"appreciate" the square law of drag, and that power required is the

square of

the square, but why do they ignore it!  At least you tried, Paul.

Yea I know it's got a snowballs chance. Hope springs eternal. I'll check

in

back in three weeks and see if it is anywhere near ready to fly as they

claim. The

noise alone should shut down the airport :) Just shows you there are

people

out there with way more money than brains :) I think the shear romance of

racing

clouds the brain and disconnects the logic process :)

Here are the the AAFO rules for Reno:

The only 3 classes where engines are not specifiied are Unlimeted, Sports
Class, Biplane.

Biplane Class:    .....and the largest engine permitted is the 360
cubic-inch, 180 HP Lycoming engine.

Sport Class:     ..... This class is open to production kit-built aircraft
powered by a reciprocating engine with a displacement of 650 cubic inches or
less.

Unlimited:     ........All aircraft must have piston engines, be propeller
driven, and capable of pulling 6 G's.

Now one could argue that the Rotary is a Rotational Piston! Actually in
German (....and Wankel was German) the Rotary is called Wankelmotor or
Kreiskolbenmotor (Circular Piston Motor), but as you mentioned they would be
afraid to death, that their big BLocks and Radials would be Museum stock
shortly after the advent of the Rotary on the scene!!

Any other racing class with big publicity where the Rotary could run?

Yep! They are scared out of their wits that a cheap Japanese car engine could beat their
$50,000 aircraft engines. Well there is the Sun 100 and the Jackpot races.
If they outlaw us there we will just have to start our own race series.
