Have you called them and checked?

Geez. the speeds we are talking about 230 or 250 mph. Easy
pickin's, I
think. We have one very clean TW with a 180 hp 0-360 able
to hit
247 in smooth air. Jerry
Paul and Butch,
What about a ACRE development project using designs from our own
participants - like Chris Cosman's aircraft, it's strong (
aerobatic design)
and is designed to take a 20B. I've already offered him my
prototype
bellhousing. I'm pretty sure we could do a PSRU as well, if the HP
is too
much for Tracy's unit.
The development "proof of concept" benefits, not to mention
advertising
benefits are huge.

The perfect race gear box is a Bell 47 final drive. Good for 1000
HP
at 9000 RPM input. Only weighs 43 pounds.

Check out the best PSRU for cost, efficiency and TBO as well as
maintenance. The "Off the shelf cog belt unit" as used by the REV. Ron
VanderHart (Oshkosh forums '94-98) at that time cost less than $500. to
make, was about 30% more efficient than a planetary unit, has a TBO of
6000 hours !! and needs no lube changes. It is also adjustable for ratio
and has a redundant feature (Twin belts lightly joined.) that no
planetary can match. It's light, and generates almost no heat. My design
(13B) uses twin 150 HP belts in pusher config. I tried to sell this idea
to Tracy when he was still useing carbs instead of injection. but he's
not a believer.
George (Up Over)
Nor am I.
First nothing could be 30% more efficient than a planetary because a
planetary
is 98% efficient. Anybody making an outrageous statement like that runs a
red flag
up my flag pole. Secondly I have yet to see a rubber belt that will
transmit
500 HP let alone 900 HP.
Paul Lamar
That would just be a matter of belt width.
The R-44 helicopter uses 4 double-V-belts (8 v's total) to transmit 280 hp
max, though they are layed out so, that 2 belts can transmit all. They
easily last the 2200 hrs TBO of the helicopter. The same belts last 10000+
hrs in industrial applications.
I just think the planetary is a slicker design.
But when you get to powersettings where the trans/weight considerations
start, you might have a easier way with belts.........
Thomas J. :)
PS: It will just be a pain in the neck to get the parts for a belt redrive.
NEVER mention any A-word ( Airplane/Aircraft/Aviation) when you order any
parts! Gates belts will drop you from their client list for life!!
