The recommendation most often seen is to run a shortened interval on

petroleum to wash out anything left inside from machining or assembly, then
run a second or third interval until oil use stabilizes (hopefully at zero).
The second half is about ring seating, though.  (This is an area that I'd
like to hear about from a rotary builder - how do we know when the apex
seals are seated?)

Hold it- Why not use synthetic oil from the get go if you are lubricating the apex seals with a pre-mix in the gas? Most of our engines are being rebuilt using the original(already run) bearings, and new apex seals. Seems to me that in a rotary set up like this, synthetic would be more apropriate than petroleum oil.

I know of a race team that uses Mobil 1 in the gas instead of two-cycle oil-- I don't know their longevity or wear stats, though.
