Subject: Air cooled tangentail muffler

Based on your drawing it looks like we are talking about different
things. The cool tube is a pipe that runs thru the muffler. It will
be fed continuous cool air via a scat hose from a NACA (maybe) inlet
on the belly. The air will enter the rear of the tube and exit the
front. Originally I wanted to bring the cool air from the nose bowl
area but the new Schertz beam location blocks that. The cool tube
increases the surface area of the muffler tremendously and since it
is
provided with a steam of outside air it will significantly knock
down
the exhaust temp. So far no one is as excited about this as Ed and I
but we think if is pretty neat. Jerry

Hi Jerry/Ed;

I disagree with you Jerry, I too am excited about this also as I'm sure
are others on the list. I personally feel this is one of the biggest
breakthrough we've had in the "Muffler Department" and consider it brilliant
as it opens up all kinds of possibilities....I was also very glad/pleased to
see you and Ed huddle together....I met Ed at SNF and spent sometime with
him chewing the Rag and was very impressed with the quality of his
products....Plus most importantly, in my book he qualifies as a "Doer Par
Excellan't" :)
So this doesn't come as a great surprise to me, and I expect a lot more
of the same from you and Ed ;-)

My opinion on the muffler working is very positive.......Here's my
reasoning:

Your 6"OD x.065" wall x10"lg body has an internal surface area of 176in2
(incl 3 2" pipe holes)
The 2 donut end plates 5.875"OD x 2"ID " " " " " 48 "
Total Internal surface area = 224in2,
The 2"OD x 10"lg center cooling tube has a surface area of 63in2

224 sq inches of area soaking in an engine compartment's hot ambient
will be countered by 63 sq inches of external very cool rammed in air....Put
another way, we are subjecting the Muffler to 28% of a much cooler Contact
area continuously while cruising.....This is much better than what we
presently have right now flying :)

BTW, I would definitely try the very, very best to feed it from the
FRONT and exit it to the REAR....It's just more natural, sort of like
swimming with the current....Even if it means using a P-51 snorkel....After
all we all have one in our face that works pretty good even while not
running :-)

Butch

Jerry,
I agree with Butch about feeding it from the front - perhaps you can put the
exhaust at an angle and therefore have the entrance feed from under the
engine mount beam.

This wouldn't upset your exhaust pipe as it is coming out the side of the
can anyway.

Just a suggestion!
George (down under)

It won't work going in the front!!!! Sheesss!
