Activation is a technique that prevents users from installing the same
license of XP on multiple computers.  XP automatically develops a hash
value of your installed components, logs onto a Microsoft computer,
and registers that value along with the license info.  Then, if you
change the components of your computer significantly, or try to
install the same license on another computer, it won't run.

If you don't activate, XP will cease to operate. Nice, huh!
