This has been a fun project.... squeezing a quart into a pint pot.
I think 16" is too wide for the rad, mine is 14" and that is
about the
max. No room for a oil cooler alongside either.
What about that 4" thick dual rad with a 4" thick tank on one
end and
two 2" tanks on the other end? Both ports could come out the
front and
right side and go directly up to the water pump with very short
runs. I
think I might have CR Racing make one.
BTW Perry how is your oil cooler in the strake working these days?
Got any pictures of the final oil cooler air outlet duct you
are using?

These are pictures taken last February, it has been painted now
for a
long time. Exit is directly to airstream like the rad. Oil temps
improved about 10 to 20 degrees but I attribute all of that to
switching
>from the 82 to the 86 oil cooler. It still exceeds 210 when
ambient is
above 80F, and I have to throttle back in the climb. And that is
only
120 HP. I'm still sceptical of the 210 max oil temp. I think it goes
much higher than that in the car while only cruising around town at
40mph on a warm day, based on some temperature data I took years
ago in
the oil pan of my car. 210 is probably a good idea for cruise, but
temporarily exceeding that in climb seems to be a necessity.

Thanks for the pictures Perry.
I still have your old oil cooler. I am going to have Ed flush it out
and weld on a new end tank. Then I will do a back to back cooling
test on it measuring the inlet temp verses the outlet temp comparing
it to another Mazda oil cooler I have. This will determine if there
is a difference in Mazda oil coolers from year to year.
BTW Ed next time you have one of these oil cooler end tanks
off please take a close up picture of the ends of the open tubes.
Is there any problem if I cut the tank off before I send it to
you?
What pressure are you now getting in the oil cooler inlet duct Perry?
A 14 inch wide by 25 inch long rad core would still give 700
cubic inches.
That should still be plenty as the air is freely able to leave
through the bottom. With the 5 inch wide oil cooler next to the rad
that would give a 19 inch wide overall width to the cooling pack.
The firewall is 20 inches wide according to a drawing you sent. In
the 3D of the cowling the spinner is 14 inches in diameter. This is
somewhat larger than yours so that also makes the rad look closer
to the thrust line. Also the rad in the 3D is up closer to the
bottom of the engine than yours is. I assumed a custom oil pan. The
rear end housing on the 13B is roughly 13 inches wide. There is
plenty of room room to suck the motor mounts in one or more inches
on each side. The rubber bushings are two inches in diameter so that
gives a width of 16 inches minimum back at the rear motor mount
position. Add an inch or two for clearances and that gets you up to
18 inches or so. I placed them where they are to give a bit more
clearnce to the turbo charger with a simple motor mount.
I'll send a top view 2D drawing with dimensions later.

I just looked at my cad drawing, it shows firewall to be 19 inches
wide.
Look at those photos you just sent with this message. Make that
rad any
wider and it will be a very square corner on the bottom instead of the
rounded fairing into the rad that I have.
What about putting the oil cooler next to the intercooler?
Here is a top view of my new engine mount. C-C distance between
the two main
rubber mounts is 14 inches, and that will make the cowl wider at
that point
than it is now on my plane.

Yes that would work. Good idea. Perhaps one on one side and the
other on the other side.
Here it is with a 14 inch rad along side the oil cooler
and the motor mounts sucked in a bit. Everything still fits.

BTW Perry, one large difference between your direct drive Long EZ and
a Long EZ with one of Tracy's PSRU's is the distance from the back of
the end housing to the prop. Correct me if I am wrong but your
spacer is about
8 inches long while Tracy's gear box is 14 inches long. It is a lot
easier
to streamline the cowl if the prop is further from the engine. The back
of the cowl gets less blunt. A six inch spacer on Tracy's box and a
14 inch spinner would be even better.
There is an 8" extension and the adaptor is 2", that puts the front of
the prop 10" behind the big stock flywheel. I think it is about 12"
behind the engine, or 2.5" farther forward than Tracy's PSRU.
IMHO Perry yours would streamline better with a larger spinner and
wider blades
to absorb the same amount of HP. I know this is a lot of work and might
not pay off that much. Did you detect and improvement when you
removed the
stock intake system and reduced the volume of the cowl?
I agree, if I make another fan I'll do that. I did have a small speed
increase, something slightly less than 5 knots.
I went up to the hanger and checked the stock 1991 turbo compressor.
It is not possible to index the compressor 180 degrees so I changed
it to 90 degrees I also used your idea of putting the oil cooler in
the left strake and moved the intercooler to the right strake.
This seems to be the cool setup. Armpit scoops can be used to feed
both the oil cooler, like your system, and the intercooler. the only
thing under the engine now is the 14 inch wide rad core.
Here is the 3D and 2D top view. This is getting pretty close to about
the only practical way to stuff a stock 1989-1991 turbo set up in a
Long EZ

Looks good. I have a turbo engine on a test stand, maybe someday I'll
put it in the LEZ and do it this way. I have all my intake stuff on the
right side now where you have the intercooler, that would be ideal for
my installation.

I have been mightily impressed with Dave Leonard's stock Mazda turbo
powered
RV6. He did a damn fine job of installation. It seems to be holding up fine
at 30 inches of mercury. It certainly has a distinctive sound which
you will all hear in the videos.
BTW Bob White should have the videos we shot up on his web site any
day. IMHO
some of the shots were very exciting. The first thing you see is the
shadow of
Dave's plane on the mountain in the background. It looks like a large
bird of
prey coming down to snatch up the RX8 and fly away with it. The RX8 is
doing its
best to out run the bird but it fails :)

Here is the cowl on. I think the cowl looks pretty slick. Looks like the
stock
Turbo II intercooler will fit better than this one. Perhaps I can index
that compressor
down another 45 degrees by drilling and taping new holes in the compressor
housing. That would clean up the area around the junction of the strake
and cowl.

rotary. If a builder has not taken into account a wider firewall or a
canopy that starts to taper at it's mid point the resulting cowl could get
difficult. I like the idea of a prop extension but I do not know if Tracy
has tested or designed for it.
