Subject: Mazda Racing oil Cooler

Is that an RX8 body you are running Lynn?
Do you have a picture of how the air exits the rad. Looks like they are right
under the hood. I assume the sheet metal is cut away on the intake side.
I hope Mazda Speed is giving you money :)

The two centerline coolers are about 3" from the underside of the hood. I
should have mounted them inside the radiator box to give them an extra 1 1/2" of
clearance. These two cool scavenge oil, that has a lot of air and blowby
gasses mixed in with it, and so are quite a bit less efficient than is the cooler
on the right of the picture. That is in the pressure loop at 100 PSI of solid
filtered oil right into the engine.

Mazda comp is just part of the replacement parts operation. They have a very
small budget. I don't know if that is the Ford influence or Mazda. I would
have had several sets of molds available for RX-8 parts as soon as the car was
for sale. But they didn't ask me for help. Any of the tube frame cars now
running could convert to the new body in a weekend. But after all this time, there
is still no source for glass RX-8 bodies. Very short sighted in my thinking.
The SCCA has it in GT-2 with the 13B and a street port, where it would need 315
HP or GT-3 with a 12A where it will need 265 HP. We have about 245 HP.
It is not a great shape compared to the 95 body. Kind of a giant step
backwards. Wins in GT-3 are mathematically possible (if the Toyotas break). Wins in
GT-2 are not. You can run a Miata body in GT-2 with a bridgeported 13B, so that
would be the combination to at least get closer to the front.

The rules will not even give the rotary a level playing field. I guess they
just got tired of getting their buts kicked all those years.

At any rate, Nissan and Toyota have been running the SCCA for some time now
and they see no reason to change anything. Mazda is still the engine to have in
Formula Continental and Formula Atlantic. There is Formula Mazda, where a
Mazda wins every time.

We get a check for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place. Not even enough to pay an entry
fee, but better than nothing.

The only way to end up with a small fortune in racing, is to start out with a
big fortune.
