Paul,
 The alternate manifold position is interesting. My suggestion is, use a shallow bend up in the front tube and a shallow bend down in the rear tube. The bends would be in the part of the tube that sticks straight out of the engine. The portion of the pipe that "bumps" could have fewer bends.

This manifold is made with off the shelf Burns Stainless three inch center
line radius two inch diameter tube bends. Unless this stuff is done using off
the shelf bends and 3D it is hard to say what works and what doesn't.
