The front runner is angled up 45 degrees.
This should be all you need to make a Russell.

Paul, is there any references available concerning bends and radiuses in
intake tubes? Obviously a straight tube would be best, but how can one
adjust for neccessary bends in the system, and how to adjust for
different
bends in individual tubes like the Russel in Jerrys case?

My UEG is that a tube with lots of bends should be shorter than a
straight
tube for the increased drag and therefor reduced speed.

You need a Burns Stainless catalog. Or you can search the internet for tube
bends. R&B Wagner have an online catalog of pipe bends but the wall
thickness
is quite thick at .14 while tubing can be had in .063 wall.

The Russell was designed for off the shelf tubing bends and they are
probably
pretty close to the state of the art as far as radius and wall thickness
are concerned. As far as I know the only way around these limitations
are castings.

Paul,

that is not what I was after, I have all the catalog and material references
your ever put on the list.

I was after what happens to airflow if it has to go around bends.
I can access plenty of data from hydraulic companies for pressure loss
calculations for distance, bends, valves, etc.
But it seems there is nothing out there for air and the tubing sizes used in
rotaries and the air pressures comon in this application.

The LeMans had the intake pretty much straight with only one 30· (?) bend.
If you start to do more bends like Jerry's Russel application the efficiency
must go down for the more work the air needs to go around the bends. When
you have to do different bends for for/aft rotor you will also have
different flows even if the tubes are same length. How do you compensate for
different intake tube shapes due to bends in the tubes.

OK I have no idea. I guess the larger the bend radius the better.
I agree but we don't have the room for 16 to 18 inch straight runners.
Perhaps in a helicopter.
