The 2.85:1 gear box has made a large difference
in the optimum length of the runners opening up
a lot of possibilities for new intake manifold configuration.
This one is designed around the second gen four port engine.
The second gen four port engine is the turbo engine with high
compression rotors. The HP curve can be broadened by adjusting
the the length of the center port runners if you are looking
for a better compromise between high speed and climb. At the expense
of top speed of course. Peak power is generated when all four
runners are the same length and adjusted for diameter as well.
A smaller diameter moves the curve down so peak power would
be generated with shorter center runners. How much shorter we
don't know yet. It will probably take a dyno run or two
to find out.
A slightly different version will work with the old six port engine,
the third gen engine with high compression rotors and the
RX8 engine either with the six port high power version or the low power
four port version. The six port RX8 version has the potential for
a very simple broad band manifold using six runners. Good for use
in a race car.
The trick is different adapters from the oval shaped or double
circle ports to round tubes. Fortunately help is on the way.
Rhino has a command called "unroll developed surfaces" that generates
a pattern that is then cut out of soft .063 6061-O and rolled up
and welded along the seam. That gives you an adapter that can then
be shaped into what you need without any stretching of metal.
