That might be a problem. I would take it out and plug the bypass hole.
Easy to do. Do you have the pictures on how to do that. I took a quick look
and could
not find them.

No, I don't remember seeing such a picture Paul?

OK I'll search for it. I think we did this when Perry was having oil
cooling problems. OK here is one of them. As I recall you use a 1/4 NPT
tap to thread the small bypass hole you see and put in a pipe plug.
Should reduce the pressure drop across the cooler and be one less
thing to fail. I would tack weld the plug in place.
Will also delay the oil temp rise when taking off if you start with
about 100 F oil.

I think it might have been 1/8" NPT. It's not a very large hole. I warn you,


if you do this, your oil temp will run way too cool before takeoff and on descent.

Right Perry, 1/8th NPT. Too cool?  I wish more people had that problem.
It will warm rapidly on take off when power is high and air flow low.
As long as it gets over 180 in flight that is enough to vaporize the raw fuel.
My 230 HP O-470 has 12 quarts of oil. We have five. One of the reasons aircraft engines
have less problems with oil temp than we do. It takes a lot of climbing
to heat 12 quarts.

I like having the oil thermostat in place because the oil rapidly warms
up to 160 F while taxiing out, and during a long descent it will drop to
160F and sit there. If you plug that bypass, it will drop down to 100F
or lower during descent. Maybe it's not a problem? Plugging it made no
difference in oil temps at high power.
