We have two examples of P-port engines generating close to 300 HP
tested
on dyno's with two inch runners. One of which with fixed length
runners
dominated road racing road racing in the US for a decade where low
speed
torque
and engine response was and still is absolutely essential. Then
P-ports
were more or
less outlawed in US road racing as too powerful. Not fair to piston
engines.

Did I say anything about conspiracies? Rolf and Jerry are not the only
people
advocating small runners out there. Tracy much to my chagrin also choose
the
low power, four port RX8 engine for his latest engine. Despite the stock
six port high power RX8 engine having 240 HP. Probably at the urging of
Bruce
Turrentine. A major mistake IMHO and so far Tracy has not gone any faster
than
his old 3rd gen engine.
Bruce's new manifold with the tiny runners is indicative of his thinking
on this
matter. These activities set us back years IMHO. Everett Hatch was going
20 MPH
faster ten years ago. The rotary clearly has a much better power to weight
ratio than any piston engine despite Mazda's excessive use of cast iron
for the end housings but that will NEVER be demonstrated until people
start
tuning it right so it can produce the power it is capable of. Unless we
start
wearing these engines out we will never know what they are capable of.
What is inexplicable about this is Tracy has everything to gain and
nothing
to lose. Unless of course he really does not want to sell ten times
as many PSRU's and fuel injection computers. By comparison my next door
hangar neighbor Klause goes out and blows everybody away racing his
Varieze
and doing extremely well at Reno beating airplanes with twice the power.
He is selling electronic ignition systems like hot cakes. He is also
buying $200,000 hangars and one of the largest houses on one of the
highest hills around Santa Paula.
Pilots are stubborn like mules. Reminds me of an old joke. One farmer
sells a mule
to another farmer telling him it is the greatest mule in the world.
The second farmer brings the mule back in a few days and says; "I thought
you said this mule was the greatest mule in the world? I can't get him to
pull
anything let alone a plow." The first farmer picks up a 2 by 4 and smacks
the mule
on the butt and says "gitup". The mule takes off like a scalded cat. The
first farmer
says; "First you have to git his attention."

I'm looking at those Graphs you sent me and can't work out what D/B is - is
that Diameter V Length (B) ratio?
Also it's very difficult to read.

Yes D/B is the diameter of the intake pipe divided the bore of the piston engine.
Keep reading George.
There is no direct correlation with the rotary. I uploaded
this stuff to illustrate the complexity of the problem. I am sure Mazda spent
millions on tuning the Le Mans, engine. Nobody anywhere is likely to improve
on it without a similar expenditure in dyno and fabrication time.
If you pick up a book on Fluid Mechanics you will not see this subject treated
as it is probably beyond even CFD. It is a transient phenomena not easily treated
mathematically.
