Going to the top of the firewall will give a bit better angle. Don't forget
to order left and right hand ball joint threads so all you have to do is give the tube
a few twist to adjust the angle.

I got the 1/2" rod ends on order. I just got right handed ones, because
they have long coupling nuts in 1/2"-20 right hand thread but no left
hand. Also, with two right-hands, it won't tend to unscrew itself.

I don't see how these engine mounts could be mass-produced for Long-EZ
retrotfit. The landing gear bolts are mounted at strange angles, and the
spacing between them will vary from plane to plane. On mine they are not
even symetrical from left side to right side - building error by the guy
I bought the project from. So there isn't much choice but to jig it up
on my plane to tack it together.
