I talked to the manufacturer of my 64 x 78 prop, and he said
it was
designed for a builder who had an E-Racer with a planned turbo 13b

Leon and I had a long discussion on here a few years ago. He
convinced me
he had all
these rotary resources in Sydney do do all these fantastic things and
a
great shop to do them in.
I flew to Sydney specifically to check it out. I met Leon near the
airport
and spent the day driving
all over Sydney. None of it was true. Just a bunch regular rotary
community suppliers some of
whom had not seen Leon in years. No shop... no nothing! As I
understand it
he is in and
out of the hospital on a regular basis. If I never hear the man's
name
again I will be very
happy.
Your manifold design is almost done anyway. I need the dimension from
top
of firewall to top of spar and the depth of the spar.
The six port needs extensive modifications but once done it seems to
be
the
hot tip in road racing these days. From reading the above I assume
you
have the
four port engine with low compression rotors. Where did you get that?
could be part of your HP problem.
Your prop can be shaved a bit to fit 190 to 210 HP which with a good
six
port manifold
and ram cold air is right in the ball park.

Hi, Paul....yes, the engine that is currently on my SQ2000 is a 1989
turbo
model (without a turbo). I am of the impression that my new NA 6 port
would
give me more power once it is ported. (Hope I am correct on this).
The
prop manufacturer said he could cut the prop to a smaller diameter, but
since there is so much pitch, there is only so much he can trim without
getting too thin on the blades. Perhaps with a ported 6-port and a
slightly
smaller diameter prop, I might be more in the ballpark of a balanced
prop/engine combination. I will try to get out to the airport tomorrow
to
get the rest of the measurements. Take care. Paul Conner
I would send the engine to Mazdatrix and let them port it as it will need
to be completely disassembled. John at Mazdatrix is very good. He built
Perry's engine a few years ago and Perry is still flying it.
I can get the intake port pattern from John and design a transition
from that shape to a round tube. Ed Klepies can then build a manifold
for you and send it to Mazdatrix. We can install it on the engine at
Mazdatrix
and test and tune it on their dyno. You will need to make a decision on
the exhaust system as I think a ported six port would choke on the stock
Mazda
cast iron manifold. This will provide the newsletter with a lot of hard
factual
information on this subject.
In the mean time you can keep flying your airplane with the engine you
have.

Here is a better illustration of the Rhino "unwrap developed surfaces"
command.
This 2 inch long transition is from a typical ported six port engine port
to two
inch round tubing. If you have room for it you could make it smoother by
making it longer such as 3 or 4 inches long.
This is a very powerful technique for laying out accurately made welded
sheet metal rotary engine intake manifolds.
BTW get a price from Mazdatrix for the porting labor as it may be as cheap
to go to one of Jerry's p-port rotor housings with a guaranteed
230 HP potential at 6000 RPM. Demand a 1.875 hole :) Don't let him
talk you into a puny 1.5 inch hole :)
You would save money on the manifold fabrication labor.
Fewer expensive tube bends to buy as well.

Hi, Paul....I started taking the engine apart already.....The local Mazda
specialist that I got the engine from said he would assist me in porting it
and rebuilding it in exchange for a ride in my plane. Hard to beat that
kind of pricing. Let's see....9 gallons per hour of fuel, approximate fuel
cost of $1.61 per gallon, for a 1 hour ride.....Got to get my
calculator....too many numbers to figure out in my head, but I think I'm
getting the better of the deal. Paul Conner
I think you can get porting templates from Racing Beat or Mazdatricx. Show him
those pictures I sent of the six port and have him make it look like that.
When you get done send me a pattern of the port openings so I can do the
transitions.
Don't forget to order some TES O rings for both the rotor housings
and the oil O rings on the side of the rotors. About the same price
as the Mazda parts but a couple of hundred degrees higher of insurance.
Chuck Dunlap has been running the oil O rings for a couple of years now.
