The pump drive shaft design would be a relative night mare
compared to picking an existing shaft and encorporating the apex oil
pump
on that shaft. Keep it simple.

Paul, I was under the impression that the pumps used by mazda are
the Mikuni pumps. I may be  incorrect there. If the standard pump
could be used it would be as simple as replaceing the pump and
using a different reservoir  or drawing from the sump.  The mikuni
pump can be used RPM only, (without throttle attachment), which
is probably OK for the rotary.

I think the early units were Mikuni. Ever since the 3rd gen they are
stepper motor control and gravity feed. Not fed from the oil pressure
gallery.
That means if you are upside down or negative G's they don't feed.

A small gear pump will suck oil so a flop tube in an aux tank will
work for negative G's. Or you can suck it out of the pan if you insist
on using crankcase oil to lube the apex seals. In that case I highly
recommend Idemitsu rotary engine oil.

All OMP pumps are MIKUNI, even the RX8 OMP is from Mikuni. I have one in my
hand right now. The way the pump is fed with oil has not changed. Oil is
comming out of the oil gallery into a necked down part of the pump drive
shaft and goes out through a hole on the other side of the housing. The exit
hole is appr the same size as the inlet hole. The drive shaft has a flat
section along the side to the OMP for the oil path to the pump. There is
very little pressure left at the pump intake.
