Paul,  all I see is a black material enclosed in a metal tube.  Gordon told
me he thought it was an inductive sensor but wasn't sure.  I'll check next
week if you haven't found out earlier.

I think that just about leaves inductive.

Unless they've made some real headway in the last few years, capacitive sensors seemed to always be clunkier than that one in the picture is...and the capacitive types weren't often used for fine or
fast sensing...at least I didn't find them suited for such applications.

The NPN output correlates with what Bennie van de Goor said.
This will require some signal conditioning.

5K Hertz sounds marginal however.

I did not think they could sense all metals. News to me.
