Hi Guys,

My RV6A come alive yesterday when I started the Powersport rotary
for
the first time.I used Jerry Hey's idea of the tangential exhaust
system and am very pleased with the sound both at idle and right
up
to
about 5000 rpms which was as high as I went. Idle at 850 rpm is
very
smooth. The noise is not excessive and the sound in my mind was
very
acceptable. The question I have is, will 304 stainless stand up to
the
temperatures??? The flange is .250, the short stub pipes are .125
and
the can and downpipe is.065 wall. 304 is all I could find locally
at
the time but I will redo if necessary now that I have heard the
results.
Thanks for your help,

Congratulations. Hope to see you at OSH.
With those thickness' I think it will do OK.

BTW folks this is a p-port engine.

What throttling does the Powersport use?

850 rpm is great! Especially for a p-port.

Is it worth it to try to put some instrumentation on the stainless
to
get
an idea of how hot it actually is? Maybe some welder crayon, or
some
of those temperature stickers...

Regards,

Matt-

They use butterflies in the rotor housing.

That is good news in every category. Glad the p port idles at 850
rpm,
glad the tangential exhaust is quiet and glad it allows sufficiently
free breathing. I might add I am not surprised. Jerry

Gary, I think 304 will flake if gotten hotter than 1400 degrees
(working on memory so that number needs to be checked). If it flakes
than eventually it will fail, The bonus, if you decide to go with
321 using 16 gauge throughout. is that you can build an exhaust system
that weighs less than half the one you have now.

It is mild steel that flakes Jerry. Ed Anderson has been flying for years with 304.
