I realized right from the beginning we would never have the power we could have if
we limited the RPM to 6000 by using only a 2.17:1 gear ratio.
A similar situation is occurring right now with P-port verses side port.
If we are ever going to impress the aviation community with the rotary we need
a better power to weight ratio than the current air cooled aircraft engine.
As it is now with side ports the rotary is just about parity. With P-ports
the engine will easily generate 250 HP and weigh what a current 200 HP IO 360 weighs
namely right around 300 pounds. 250 HP Lyc O 540 and Cont. IO 470 weigh about
420 pounds.
The rotary engine shows no signs of ever wearing out at the current 200 HP level.
Until we see evidence of that we are not taking full advantage of the rotary engine.
