Subject: totally off topic - colds / flu

Make sure to get lots of sleep, stay hydrated, and don't skip any
meals
(esp breakfast)!
Personally, I don't believe in getting sick.  It just doesn't make
any
sense.  :)

What I have recently discovered too late is ear loop those masks
that doctors wear
when they operate. They kill 99% of the Bacteria. If you come in
contact
with a person that is sick whip out your mask and put it on :)

Paul: My wife is japanese; they all run around with those little
masks all
the time for that and pollen incidents, which is a big thing over
there.
Like everyone else over here, I thought it funny and a waste of
energy and
time. Hah, wrong again. They really do work. Oh yes, a little
hydrogen peroxide in the ears not only cleans them out but also
helps cut down on
and/or speed up recovery from head colds and flue. And, just this
year, had
another fellow convince me to carry that gelled alcohol stuff
(purell, I
think) in small bottle to use on hands after shaking hands all
around, etc.
That too works. Maybe that really is where we get colds, flue etc.
from.
jofarr, soddy tn, also no medical doctor

In direct contravention of what epidemiologists have been telling us
for
years... the alcohol hand gels have actually been proven MORE
effective on disinfecting hands than plain soap and water.

Keep in mind this is for otherwise "clean" hands that are not grossly
soiled or contaminated (with blood, stool, vomitus, dirt, etc)..   I
believe CDC has included this into their infection control guidelines
(waterless alcohol based hand cleaners).

I'm with you on the alcohol hand cleaning gels Dave.  I use them every
day.

There is something else that should be mentioned too.

There was a great study done of senior citizens in Italy and the
prevalence of influenza.  They looked at how many people they were in
contact with, diet, etc.  It turns out that the major factor was how
many people they contacted per day, but not the way you may think:  It
turned out that that the more people they had physical contact with,
the LESS they had the flu.   Backwards from what you would expect from
a simple virus vector model.

Turns out that that there is a lot of science showing the more social
contact people have the healthier they are, and the longer they live.
One mechanism may be the immune system.  White blood cells have been
shown to have a receptor for every neurotransmitter aka "Molecules of
Emotion" (see book of same title) known.  So your emotional state
greatly influences your immune state.

Like the song says, don't WORRY, BE HAPPY.

Paul, and everyone,

In Nepal where I do volunteer work in the winter months, they have a
saying that if you drink the water and live to be over 11 years old the
only thing that can kill you is a bullet.  Well not quite but I did live
there for a year before coming to  ultra-clean Japan.   I never got sick
in Nepal at all until after coming back from living in Japan for the
first year.  Perhaps it was all those cold bucket showers in the winter
time that strenghtened my immune system or and the sedate life studying
medicine with the Tibetans.

Doug on the road

Good qi.  Meditation protects the immune system.  Tongue only slight
in-cheek.
