The modified stock turbo now has about 40 hrs. I flew it to Mammoth
last weekend and It did well. Coming home at 17.5k I was seeing 185
KTAS with an 85 kt quartering tail wind giving me 265 kts (over 300
mph!) on the GPS. Thats really cool.
No problems with the turbo at all. If it gets to 500 hrs I will
consider it a success. Max boost at SL with the w/g removed is about
45"MAP, which is perfect really. That is as much as I would want
to use
for take off and more than I can cool continuously (which is
closer to
30" give or take depending on the OAT). No more mods planed in
the near
future, just flying and getting ready for paint.

Thanks Dave. I assume you now have O2.

This sounds great. What was your MAP at 17.5K? Is this turbo stock
or the
did you change the trim?
Thanks

The compressor is a 60-1 and the turbine is a TO4 clipped to fit in the
stock housing. With the wastgate open can only make about 30" MAP at
that altitude, but I can't use it all because my prop is not big
enough. I hit 6700 engine RPM but I didn't feel comfortable staying
there. I plan a catto 3-blade in the near future.

Thanks Dave,
30" at 17.5K is not bad. Especially with the compact unit you have.
With a new prop and paint you are there.
Doug.
The 13B turbo rotary really shines when the power to weight ratio is
compared to any piston engine. The intrinsically low compression Wankel
rotary is inherently much better when turbo charged. Structurally superior
it is able to tolerate high boost levels with out coming apart in the
hand grenade mode. With no exhaust valves to fail it has further
durabilty advantages.
Time for this discussion again. Dave has removed the waste gate
flapper on his modified stock turbo but that is not necessary.
With better cooling and a better prop the excellent MAP results
Dave is getting at 17.5 K could be even better with a functioning
waste gate IMHO.
A simple mod to the back cover of the stock
waste gate will allow it to open fully at low altitudes
where that is advisable and close fully at high altitudes.
The new dual exhaust tubes are merely welded to the back cover.
IMHO Dave had restricted room around his motor mount tubes to
implement this idea.
